Classification Labeling

An intelligent UX wizard assists in building valid classification labels, based on clearance entitlements.

Classification Roll-up

Classification of related data portions are dynamically aggregated into an effective "maximum" classification.

Access Control

Data access is protected by evaluating a user's clearance entitlements against the data classification label.

Extensible Schema

Classification label semantics are defined by an extensible schema, supporting complex nested classification markings and access-control rules, such as U.S. Government CAPCO markings.

Protecting Sensitive Data with Classification Markings

The MindLink Classification Platform is an abstract software module that allows users to build and assign classification labels to any kind of data. Classification labels are composed of one or more markings.

The attached markings inform users (and software) about the sensitivity of the data and appropriate level of dissemination, and provide a foundation for entitlement-based access-control.

The platform is designed for scalable and dynamic evaluation of classification marking arithmetic, enabling novel classification scenarios against complex marking schemas.

Extensible Custom Classification Schema

Available classification labels, their comingling and roll-up semantics, and access control logic are driven by an agnostic and extensible schema.

Any classification labeling system can be described and implemented by the platform.

CAPCO Markings

The MindLink Classification Platform is specifically designed to support US Government classification markings, as mandated by Intelligence Community Directive (ICD) 710, and described in the CAPCO Manual.

The platform supports the full CAPCO marking set and is designed to implement the document access control, banner and portion marking behavior described in the CAPCO Register.

The platform is therefore able to support advanced and novel U.S. Intelligence Community marking scenarios, including CAPCO-enabled Persistent Chat.

Data Classification in Chat for Secure Collaboration

The MindLink Classification Platform is integrated into the MindLink Persistent Chat product suite to enable first-class labeling of chat data.

Chat conversations (including Persistent Chat Rooms) may be assigned a classification label, whereby access to the conversation is dynamically cross-referenced with users' clearance entitlements.

The chat conversation is treated as a dynamically evolving classified document:

  • Users may attach classification labels to individual chat messages to denote sensitivity and dissemination.
  • The classification of each message is cross-referenced as compatible with the conversation's classification.
  • The effective maximum classification of the current chat conversation messages are dynamically rolled-up as an effective "maximum banner" component.

The MindLink user interface displays classification information compatible with the approach outlined in ICD 710:

  • The maximum classification available to the user is displayed as an application-level banner.
  • Each message is labelled individually as a document "portion".
  • The "roll-up" of each chat conversation is shown as a conversation-level banner.

The MindLink Classification platform evaluates chat data access control at chat and conversation levels dynamically for all participants, based on their clearance entitlements.

Data classification control sets for messages and chats are flowed downstream to consuming modules e.g. to chat bots and compliance tools.

MindLink Classified Chat Features

Attribute-based Security Clearance Enforcement

Access rights to classified chat conversations are evaluated based on a user's entitlement-based clearance. User entitlements are modeled as attribute values from corporate directory systems.

For example, users may not enter a chat room if existing messages exceed their clearance level, or are not disseminated to their organisation.

Dynamic Message Classification Roll-up and Evaluation

The MindLink Chat Platform dynamically cross-references classification markings applied to messages with the classification of the chat conversation.

The effective classification of the chat history at any time is calculated dynamically by rolling-up the message classifications.

Active Directory and Third-party Attribute Sources

The platform leverages existing user attributes from Active Directory or Azure Active Directory to determine which classification markings are available to users.

The attribute-source mechanism is pluggable to third-party or bespoke corporate directory services.

Classification Markings in Third-party Chat Systems

Using the MindLink Anywhere as the designated client for a supported chat system e.g. Skype for Business, enables classification-based chat on top of an existing collaboration backbone.
